Strategy

In the early game, Sledgehammer does a little bit of everything: it tanks for more important units like marksman or void eye, it clears moderate amounts of chaff, and it even deals enough damage to kill any 100-cost unit by itself. However, without investment, it quickly starts to fall off in all of these roles by the late game. To maintain late-game relevance, technologies such as Armor Enhancement or Field Maintenance can make the Sledgehammer very difficult to kill, especially with levels, while Range Enhancement, Mechanical Rage and Armor-Piercing Bullet can turn Sledgehammers into a DPS threat. Field Maintenance + Damage Sharing (commonly called “link + regen”) is an inexpensive 2-technology combo that transforms a line of sledgehammers from a sort of medium-sized chaff unit in the late game to a monstrous tank that requires extremely high single-target damage to defeat.
